Acupuncture
I should probably start by admitting I have a massive phobia of needles so to even seriously consider acupuncture was an indication of just how committed I have been to my rehab.
But as I understand it Acupuncture is the application of teeny tiny needles into acupressure points throughout your body. The depth, size and placement affect the flow of qi (your life force) in your body. The flow or pathways of qi throughout and around your body can get blocked causing dis-ease or pain in your body. The application of these needles can unblock these blockages and allow room for relief and the qi to flow more freely. Enabling you to live you life more fully.
Chinese Acupuncture is massively awesome and super complex. And as a health treatment it’s been studied for over 2,500 years. An Acupuncturist takes years of study to learn qi, the various meridians in your body and how everything works together. I honestly have barely scratched the surface because the knowledge base is so vast.
It it recognised in New Zealand as a health care service and can be an effective method to treat pain.
Sessions are subsided by ACC and range from $40 - $80 with ACC. They typically take 30 minutes to an hour.
Dry Needling is not Acupuncture
Ok so Dry Needling is not acupuncture. From what I understand in NZ any health practioner can do a course or module and start sticking needles in your muscles. The first time I tried this it felt like I had a dead shoulder for a day or two but did help. I then let another physio try and it stress my body out so badly for over a week. I had massive headaches and felt completely wired and sore throughout my shoulders and hands. So my recommendation here is to ask a few questions from the practioner about their experience levels with Dry Needling before you let them anywhere need you with a needle.
