Cranio Sacral Therapy
I’m not a practioner or expert, this is only my understanding and experience.
Cranio (Cranium) - Found at the based of your skull
Sacral (Sacrum) - Found at the the base of your spine
Cranio Sacral Therapy works on the relationship and connection between your cranium and sacral centres, which is a major highway from your nervous system to the rest of your body.
A typical session will be approximately an hour long and you’ll lie on a table while the CS therapist lays their hands on your head, back and maybe other parts of your body, such as your arms and legs. It is non manipulative and non invasive, which means it doesn’t require any physical body manipulation. It’s a very gentle therapy and not physical in the same way physio or massage can be.
The first CranioSacral Therapist I saw was Liz Kirkman, from CranioWaves in Wellington. She is incredible, and after a few weeks of therapy I felt noticeable improvement following my seventh concussion. She has a lot more detail on her website craniowaves.co.nz. After I moved to Hawke’s Bay I’ve seen a few different therapists and each have been amazing.
Because it isn’t recognised by ACC (yet) it isn’t part funded in the same way other therapies are, so sessions can vary between $70 - $120 depending on which part of the country you’re in and the practioner.
This is an unregulated practice in New Zealand and isn’t recognised the same way that Physiotherapy, Osteopathy and Chiropractic care but in saying that, it is definitely a form of therapy that I’ve found benefit from. It’ll all depend on your practioner of course, the same with any other professional.
